With just a few days left before the start of the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the October Consumer Demand Index Report has been released with some great news. Recovering from a recent 12-point decline experienced in August, the index jumped 26 points to 57 for October. This is the highest level the index has seen since July 2009, when the index also reached 57. The following chart shows the overall index, in blue, as well as the three-month moving averages, in red.
SEMA’s Consumer Demand Index for the month of May is up 25% over the
same month last year. With a value of 40 for May, the index experienced
a decrease of 8 points or 17% from April.
Evaluating the business environment becomes increasingly important when the economy goes through the kind of turbulence we’ve seen over the past two years.

SEMA's Consumer Demand Index has fallen for the second consecutive
month, dropping from 36 points in October to 32 points in November, and
a full 13 points from September. But it isn't all bad news. Compact performance and hot rod enthusiasts have shown increased interest in their respective niches.
Consumer intentions to buy specialty-equipment products rose in
September, up three points from the August reading of the SEMA Consumer
Demand Index.
