The Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO), the SEMA council dedicated to preserving and promoting the automotive restoration industry, will host a booth at the 19th annual Japanese Classic Car Show on Saturday, October 12, in Long Beach, California.

The Japanese Classic Car Show is the premier industry gathering for kyusha enthusiasts--devoted fans of classic Japanese automobiles. While ARMO primarily focuses on business-to-business outreach, the council's presence at the event will enable the kyusha community to connect with restoration experts, allowing both groups to engage and network over a shared passion for automotive heritage.

ARMO's booth will be located next to SEMA member company Moss Miata and feature a restored vehicle on display. Attendees can look forward to engaging with industry professionals, discovering new restoration resources and celebrating the timeless beauty of classic cars.

Join ARMO for this exciting partnership and experience the best of both worlds of automotive restoration and kyusha appreciation!

From the SEMA Washington, D.C., office

Driving Force Action, SEMA and PRI's Super PAC, is leading an independent expenditure campaign in the current presidential election on behalf of the specialty-equipment industry. It's a rare moment for a top industry issue like this to play such a significant role in a high-level, national political campaign. SEMA and PRI have been leading the charge over the past two years, promoting the policy that the government should remain technology-neutral when it comes to the future of vehicle technology.

The campaign released its latest ad this week with the intent of educating voters about the impact of the Biden-Harris policies. The ad highlights for viewers in four battleground states the human cost of federal electric-vehicle (EV) mandates and the grave threat such policies pose to thousands of small businesses nationwide. The ad is the fifth to be released this year by Driving Force Action and is running in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. It features four small-business owners whose businesses will be severely hurt by what is effectively an EV mandate (or, otherwise considered, an internal-combustion engine ban) supported by presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Chevrolet Corvette ZORA Breaks Cover at the Nürburgring

Corvette ZORA

A new Corvette even wilder than the recently released, 1,064hp ZR1 is on the horizon for Chevrolet, according to new images obtained by SEMA News.

Sources recently spotted a Michigan-registered prototype on the Nürburgring rumored to be the Corvette ZORA that will combine the ZR1's twin-turbo V8 with the electric motor and battery system from the E-Ray hybrid, delivering an estimated 1,220 hp.

Although Chevrolet hasn't officially confirmed the development of the ZORA model, the pictured test mules feature stacked coolers, similar to those found in the E-Ray. They are used to cool the battery and/or electric motor, insiders said, leading to speculation that the prototype sports the ZR1 engine combined with the E-Ray's electric components.

Mercedes-Benz GLS Lineup to Get Refresh

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for a refresh of its GLS lineup of full-size SUVs, with recent images from SEMA News sources confirming that the AMG and Maybach versions are in line for updates.

Expected updates include cosmetic changes to the front fascia, along with updated headlamp designs at both ends of the vehicle. Inside, Mercedes may introduce a few enhancements, such as a slightly refreshed interior, improved safety features, and a revised infotainment system featuring larger screens.

'26 Audi Q3 Spotted in Germany

A redesigned third-generation Audi Q3 is expected to be unveiled either later this year or in early 2025.

SEMA News sources recently spotted a virtually undisguised prototype with distinct changes, such as split headlights with slim daytime running lights, similar to what Audi has already incorporated in the upcoming Q6 E-Tron electric SUV. The grille will also sport a new mesh design and will be accompanied by a light strip at the rear.

The Q3 is powered by an internal-combustion engine (ICE), but hybrid versions are expected, with a charging port located on the driver's side front fender. A mild-hybrid option could be available as well, though Audi has not yet provided details on additional powertrains.

An RS version, as well as a sportier, coupe-like sportback is also anticipated, according to insiders.

Toyota Corolla GRMN Caught Testing in Germany

After the introduction of the updated Corolla GR in the United States, speculation has been rising around the Corolla GRMN.

Spotted at its namesake Nürburgring--the MN stands for "Master of the Nürburgring"--the hot hatch is expected to be the most high-performance version of the Corolla to date. Powered by the turbocharged G16E-GTS 1.6L, three-cylinder engine, the GRMN will offer 300 hp and an increase to 295 lb.-ft. of torque, according to insiders.

What sets the new model apart, however, is the extreme weight reduction, sources said. Several parts will be made of carbon fiber, the rear seats will be removed and a roll bar will be installed, leading to an estimated 110 lbs. of weight savings.

CARB Webinar

SEMA Garage is strongly recommending members participate in an upcoming virtual workshop hosted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on September 17, 2024.

Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT, the online event will highlight the organization's changes to the procedures for obtaining an Executive Order (EO) for exemptions from the California Vehicle Code prohibitions against modifications. CARB has prepared changes to the procedures with the intention of obtaining CARB Board approval in the first half of 2025. The organization is hosting the upcoming webinar in order to ensure that the process will go smoothly and to engage with those affected by the proposed revisions. The event will offer participants in the workshop an opportunity to hear the proposed changes and provide comments. SEMA encourages members who use the CARB Aftermarket EO program to take advantage of the opportunity.

Register for the event at this link: CARB Virtual Workshop Registration.

Aftermarket manufacturers of performance-related products are likely aware that CARB has specific procedures they must follow in order to obtain exemptions from the California Vehicle Code prohibitions against modifications, in the form of an EO. These procedures were first adopted in 1977, then amended in 1981 and again in 1990. They remained untouched until a significant rewrite was adopted in June 2021 and first implemented in January 2022.

For the last two and a half years, SEMA has assisted members with the CARB EO application process following these new procedures. The addition of fees in April 2022 has further complicated the process. SEMA has continually communicated with CARB regarding the efficacy of these procedures and has made recommendations for further improvements.

2024 SEMA Fest Artist Spotlight: Fitz And The Tantrums
Fitz and the Tantrums band members SEMA Fest spotlight

Fitz And The Tantrums--featuring band mates Michael "Fitz" Fitzpatrick (vocals), Noelle Scaggs (vocals), James King (saxophone and flute), Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards) and Joseph Karnes (bass)--has energized popular music and culture with a series of unshakable, undeniable and ubiquitous anthems and albums. Since 2008, the Los Angeles collective has magnified the scope of pop with a dash of indie, a dose of soul and a whole lot of dancefloor-ready bounce. Their catalog spans fan-favorite records such as "Pickin' up the Pieces" (2010), "More Than Just A Dream" (2013), the gold-certified "Fitz And The Tantrums" (2016) and "All the Feels" (2019). Along the way, they've impressively tallied just shy of four billion streams (and counting) powered by enduring hits such as the four-times-platinum "HandClap," the three-times-platinum "Out of My League," platinum "The Walker," and the gold record "Moneygrabber."

Described as an inescapable presence, Fitz And The Tantrum's music has notably coursed through the mainstream conversation, soundtracking films on Netflix and campaigns for CVS Wellness, SunChips, SoFi, Xfinity, Walmart, Norwegian Cruise Line, Lay's and Wells Fargo, to name a few. Beyond standout performances everywhere, from Coachella and Bonaroo to numerous late-night television shows, Fitz and the Tantrums consistently sold out some of the most iconic venues in the world, including The Forum and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Not to mention, they've incited applause from publications such as Rolling Stone, BillboardPeople and more.

Fitz And The Tantrums' most recent album, "Let Yourself Free," arrived in 2022 with bold, bright and buoyant singles "Sway" and "Moneymaker," and last year, they released the "Perfect Holiday" EP featuring original songs to ring in the holiday season.

Drive the Vote

SEMA has launched Drive The Vote, a campaign to mobilize voters among its 7,000 member companies and the millions of American automotive enthusiasts, with resources to enable their participation in the 2024 general election.

SEMA is providing vetted links to important voter information, questions to ask candidates during campaign events and social-media assets and sample messages to encourage their employees, customers and community members to register to vote. Members planning to attend the 2024 SEMA Show, which begins on Election Day, November 5, are encouraged to vote early using the resources provided through Drive The Vote.

"Voting is an essential activity for our nation and for ensuring the automotive aftermarket industry has a say in the business undertaken by our lawmakers as the state and federal levels," said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. "SEMA's Drive The Vote campaign empowers our members and those around them with the information they need to vote in their community for the candidates who best speak for their values. And, because of the 2024 SEMA Show starts on Election Day, November 5, we're encouraging those traveling to Las Vegas to review these resources so they know how to vote early."
