Collision Repair at SEMA Show

The SEMA Collision Repair Stage, Booth #32145 located in the Upper South Hall at the SEMA Show, will serve as a hub for industry engagement. Throughout the event, subject-matter experts from SEMA, the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) will present on crucial topics, from emerging trends to the future of collision repair. In addition, live demonstrations will be conducted by experienced welding experts, offering hands-on learning of advanced techniques.

As part of the SEMA Collision Repair Stage schedule is a new program from I-CAR offering a hands-on virtual reality training experience. This cutting-edge tool accelerates skill development by simulating real-world scenarios, allowing technicians to practice hands-on techniques in a risk-free environment. I-CAR's VR program at SEMA will simulate high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) repairs modeled after I-CAR's EV cart. The cart is equipped with various components that mimic EV systems, providing a controlled environment for students to understand the complexities of EV technology, diagnostics and repair techniques. Attendees who test the VR experience at SEMA will have the unique opportunity to apply their newly acquired skills on an in-person EV cart.

For more, visit i-car.com/sema.

In addition, SCRS will present an exciting mix of seminars, networking and awards events next week. This year marks the 15th season of SCRS' acclaimed Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series. It was launched in 2010 as part of a new affiliation between the SEMA and SCRS, in response to the expressed interest of SCRS members to grow the paint, body and equipment sector's participation at the Show. The educational program--and the collision-repair and refinish industry--have since established themselves as key mainstays of the annual trade-only event.

This year's RDE sessions welcome back RDE alumni that include Kena Dacus, Decus Auto Body and Collision Repair; Josh McFarlin, AirPro Diagnostics; Mike Anderson, Collision Advice; Tim Ronak and Tony Adams, AkzoNobel; Danny Gredinberg, Database Enhancement Gateway; Jason Garfoot, 3M Collision; Nick Schoolcraft, Phoenix Solutions Group; Jeff Wildman, BASF Automotive Refinish; Phill Knapp, BASF Automotive Refinish; Andy Dingman, Calibration Technologies; Andrew Batenhorst, Pacific BMW Collision Center; Ryan Taylor, BodyShop Booster; Chris White and Danny Hacker, KECO Body Repair Products; Barry Dorn, Dorn's Body and Paint; and Michael Bradshaw, K&M Collision.

Every year, SCRS strives to provide perspectives and information from new first-time event speakers as well. This year, those include Sheryl Driggers, Collision Advice co-owner; Taylor Moss, OEConnection Repair Intelligence Team manager; David Ghodoussi, Opti-Coat CEO; and Kris Burton, Rosslyn Auto Body owner.

Audi A7

New images of an Audi A7 sedan prototype from SEMA News sources have revealed the vehicle's e-Tron-inspired interior.

The Audi A7 will still feature traditional gasoline engines and will be based on an updated version of Audi's MLB platform. Future models are expected to include mild hybrids or plug-in hybrids, according to sources, and like the smaller A5, the A7 is expected to prioritize four-cylinder engines. However, high-performance S and RS models may still utilize a plug-in hybrid system with six cylinders.

While the combustion and electric models will differ in terms of technology, they will look similar in design. The new A5 bears a resemblance to the A6 e-tron Concept shown in 2021, with both featuring sleek single-frame grilles, flared fenders nodding to Audi’s quattro heritage and slim LED headlights and taillights.

Inside, the A7’s cockpit design closely resembles that of the Audi A6 e-tron, with the primary difference being the steering wheel and HVAC layout. Options for touchscreen, steering wheel and voice controls remain available, while the widescreen display features adaptive layouts that adjust to driving conditions, displaying only the information needed at any given moment.

Kickoff Breakfast

The 2024 SEMA Show begins in high gear with its annual Kickoff Breakfast, a long-standing tradition that unites the global automotive aftermarket community for a gathering that will set the direction of the market for years to come. Held on the opening day of the SEMA Show, Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 a.m. PST, at the Paradise Event Center in the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, the Kickoff Breakfast will welcome hundreds of exhibitors and attendees from around the world to celebrate the innovation and passion that drive the industry forward.

Hosted by Jarod DeAnda, this year's Kickoff Breakfast celebration will feature the presentation of several New Product Awards, recognizing cutting-edge introductions that have made significant contributions to the automotive aftermarket industry. The awards highlight the creativity, ingenuity and technical advancements of companies dedicated to shaping the future of automotive technology and design. The Kickoff Breakfast serves as the start of SEMA Week, focused on building connections, relationship-building and discovery. Throughout the SEMA Show and nightly events, attendees will have opportunities to collaborate, share knowledge and foster new partnerships that will shape the future of the industry.

Goo Goo Dolls

Kick off your 2024 SEMA Week at the Industry Night @ SEMA Featuring The Goo Goo Dolls, an exclusive celebration of car culture, community and collaboration--Tuesday, November 5, on the SEMA Show Campus--featuring tire-smoking drift demos from OPTIMA and live performances of chart-topping music from The Goo Goo Dolls, O.A.R. and Reignwolf. (Buy tickets at SEMAShow.com.)

Ahead of the event, which will offer Showgoers with yet another opportunity to come together, celebrate the aftermarket and forge relationships that will drive the industry forward, SEMA News is sharing an exclusive spotlight on the headlining band from Buffalo, New York.

Formed by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac in 1986, The Goo Goo Dolls have quietly broken records, contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades. Beyond selling 15 million records worldwide, the group has garnered four GRAMMY Award nominations and nearly a dozen platinum and gold singles combined, and seized a page in the history books by achieving 16 number one and Top 10 hits. As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for most Top 10 singles.

Thus far, "A Boy Named Goo" (1995) has gone double-platinum, "Dizzy Up The Girl" five-times-platinum, and "Gutterflower" (2002) and Let Love In (2006) both went gold as "Something for the Rest of Us" (2010) and "Magnetic" (2013) bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. Their music continues to reach new audiences around the world and rack up platinum and gold statuses--including the recently platinum-certified "Slide," "Black Balloon" and "Better Days" --and has been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers.

Among a string of hits, "Iris" clutched number one on the Hot 100 for 18 straight weeks and would be named "Number One Top 40 Song of the Last 20 Years." On the heels of going viral on TikTok, the track recently achieved seven-times-platinum status and re-entered the Billboard charts, yet again proving the timelessness of The Goo Goo Dolls' illustrious catalog.

Diagnostics

Vehicle owners and businesses acting on their behalf received a three-year exemption from federal copyright infringement laws when accessing, storing and sharing vehicle operational data, including diagnostic and telematics data, the Librarian of Congress (LOC) recently declared.

In establishing an exemption to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, the United States statutory prohibition on circumventing technological protection measures (TPM) that control access to copyrighted works, the LOC, in consultation with the U.S. Copyright Office, is protecting vehicle owners and the automotive business of their choice from being subject to copyright infringement when they download, copy and use non-copyrightable data that is stored on electronic control units and other copyrightable works in their vehicles.

This exemption will help to preserve consumer choice by ensuring that vehicle owners can decide who works on their vehicles and the parts that are used. The Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) requested the Class 7, Computer Programs exemption in 2023, which SEMA supported in its comment to the LOC and U.S. Copyright Office.

The LOC also provided a three-year extension for the current exemption for "Computer Programs--Vehicle Operational Data" that protects vehicle owners and third-party service providers that circumvent the TPMs to access computer programs primarily designed to control vehicle telematics and entertainment systems. This exemption was first created in 2015 for vehicle owners and was expanded to include third-party service providers in 2018.

For more information, contact Eric Snyder, SEMA's senior director of federal government affairs, at erics@sema.org.

Toyota/Lexus GT3 Spotted Testing at 'The Ring'

Toyota/Lexus GT3

SEMA News sources recently captured new images of Toyota and Lexus testing their road-legal GT3 sports car at Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife.

As seen in the new images, the manufacturer is testing two different rear wing heights on the GT3, although it's unclear which will make it to production. The vehicle is also rumored to have a hybrid powertrain, according to some sources, but there is no visible charging port or usual yellow "electric vehicle" (EV) warning stickers.

Range Rover Sport EV Prototype Spied in Germany

Range Rover Sport EV

The new Range Rover Sport EV, expected to hit United States showrooms next year, was recently spotted in Germany. An expected competitor to the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne EV, the Sport EV is one of six electric vehicles Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plans to launch by 2026 under its two brands.

The test car spotted in Germany shows key differences from the gas-powered version, such as covers replacing the exhaust pipes and a redesigned grille. The battery is housed between the axles, and while not visible in the photos, the charging port is likely behind the fuel filler cap, similar to the recently launched Range Rover Electric.

The Range Rover Sport EV will have four-wheel drive, maintaining the off-road capabilities of its gas-powered counterpart, including the ability to wade through water up to 33.5 in. deep. Performance metrics will rival the V8-powered Range Rover Sport SV, which produces 630 hp and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Nissan Leaf Prototype Ditches Hatchback Design

Nissan Leaf

In a major shift, the next-generation Nissan Leaf will no longer be a family hatchback, according to new images provided by SEMA News source, instead, transforming into a crossover SUV.

The styling cues, like the coupe-like roofline, squared-off rear and higher ride height, echo the Japanese brand's "Chill-Out" concept introduced in 2021. While the production model's headlight cluster may differ slightly from the initial concept, the new Leaf will likely feature Nissan's signature black V-motion grille and boomerang-style lights, reminiscent of the Nissan Ariya.

The Leaf is expected to be built on the Renault-Nissan AmpR Medium platform, offering some hints about its powertrain and battery specifications. According to insiders, the Leaf will likely align with other cars built on the platform, like the Renault Megane E-Tech, which is equipped with a 217hp electric motor and 60kWh battery, offering an estimated range of up to 280 miles.

Inside, the new Leaf will likely feature Nissan's latest infotainment system, based on Google's Android Automotive OS.

Nissan hasn't confirmed a release date yet, but rumors suggest that production could start as early as 2025, with a reveal possibly happening before the end of this year. The new Leaf will be manufactured at Nissan's Sunderland plant in the United King.
