The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would significantly reduce the budgets of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for fiscal year (FY) 2025.

If H.R. 8998, the "Department of the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2025" becomes law, it will cut DOI's budget by $677 million and EPA's budget by $4 billion, compared to their FY 2024 levels. The legislation includes SEMA-supported amendments that would prevent the EPA from implementing new federal emissions standards for motor vehicles for model years 2027 to 2032, which are designed to heavily promote sales of electric vehicles (EVs). The bill would also force the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to withdraw its "Conservation and Landscape Health" regulation. 

The BLM regulation would allow the agency to lease lands under new and vaguely defined conservation leases; incorporate new standards when evaluating traditional multiple-use decisions; expedite designations of new Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs); and apply land health standards to all public lands. The new regulation undermines the Federal Land Policy and Management Act's multiple-use requirement for BLM lands as it would hinder access to public lands for recreation. SEMA has submitted comments opposing both the EPA and BLM rulemakings.  

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee recently passed its own bill to fund DOI and EPA in FY 2025, albeit at significantly higher levels than the House bill. The Senate bill would increase DOI funding by $13 million and DOI funding by over $1 billion more than FY 2024 levels. While the Senate version of the Interior and EPA funding legislation does include some policy riders, it does not include the SEMA-supported amendments that made it into the bill passed by the House of Representatives. 

Congress must pass 13 appropriations bills for FY 2025 by October 1, 2024, or pass legislation to continue government funding at FY 2024 levels to avoid a government shutdown.

SBN SpotlightThe SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN) has named Kira Daczko, admissions director at Universal Technical Institute, as the network's newest #SheIsSEMAspotlight member. 

Get to know Daczko in her interview with SEMA News below. 

SEMA News: How many years have you been with your current company and what do you enjoy most about working there? 

Kira Daczko: Five years. Knowledge is power and I love being a part of empowering our youth as they start their path to adulthood. 

SN: What is the most challenging part of your business or job?  

KD: Explaining the importance of working hard at learning now and how that greatly impacts our youth's futures. They are young and don't have the life experience to understand those decisions. While they are in school, they have so much knowledge at the tips of their fingers; it takes effort and hard work to learn it, practice it and retain it. 

SN: How many years have you been in the industry and what was your first industry job?  

KD: Since 2008. I started as a Motorcycle Technician at Hook Cycle.  

SN: What three qualities got you to where you are today?  

KD: I'm hungry to learn and experience all this world has to offer. I'm humble, knowing I don't have it all figured out, yet I'm confident I can figure it out. And I'm giving, meaning I want to share what I know or have learned to help others be more capable in their path through life. 

SN: Being a woman in the industry, what have been your biggest challenges and accomplishments? 

KD: Being on the road traveling up and down the West Coast alone with $250k worth of equipment I had to maintain and use for work daily was pretty challenging, but I wouldn't change that time or those experiences for anything. 

My biggest accomplishment was having a young high school girl come shake my hand and thank me for conducting the technical workshop she was in and tell me she learned a lot, and was inspired to pay it forward. I knew right then that all the work, long hours and tiring days were worth it if I positively impacted at least one other person's life. 

SN: Who are your role models or mentors in the industry?  

KD: Bernie and Denise Thompson were my mentors. They didn't give up on me they pushed me to be my best and they were educators at heart. I owe them a lot and I'm so thankful they were a part of my life when I was impressionable and finding my path. 

SN: What is the best career advice you have received?  

KD: Being "the best" is not a capped status, you have to show up motivated to be the best every day because the industry, the players and innovations are always changing. 

SN: Have you always wanted to work in the automotive industry? What keeps you here? 

KD: No. I wanted to work in only PowerSports, specifically motorcycles, when I started, but we are a transportation-reliant society, and all sectors of transportation are in need of smart capable technicians. 

SN: Who was the most influential person on your career goals? 

KD: Susie Wolf is an inspiration. She has worked her way through the ranks from driver to educator and is paving the way for the next generation of successful young lady drivers.

The SEMA Show in Las Vegas, this year November 5-8, is the specialty-equipment industry's largest gathering, the best venue to learn about the latest products, services and trends hitting the market, and an opportunity to see first-hand how the aftermarket is continuing to innovate with world-class vehicle builds and displays. And according to the exhibitors SEMA News connected with, innovation is happening in every corner of the industry, including the business services segment, which is streamlining the way automotive businesses--from shops and retailers to manufacturers and distributors--are operating.

TCS's Carpenter echoed those sentiments, stating, "If you're looking to move your business forward, [North Hall] is the place to find the right solution for your specific needs." 

The team at Shopmonkey, who will also be exhibiting in North Hall, emphasized how the section can help automotive businesses adapt to the changing world around them. 

"The Business Services section is where companies like Shopmonkey get to demonstrate how to help shop owners solve their most pressing business challenges," said Tracy Schuster, director, integrated marketing and events at Shopmonkey. "Folks come to SEMA to soak in the spirit of the event and learn how to improve. Shopmonkey's display will offer an up-close look at its software and new shop marketing suite, addressing a long-standing need for its customers, according to the company.

Exhibitor TCS, which offers an online solution geared toward tire and auto service industry businesses, plans to showcase a redesigned integrated Digital Vehicle Inspection app that is customizable to fit almost any workflow. A new "quick-tap" layout will also increase speed and efficiency, alongside updates like QuickBooks Online integration including two-sync between TireWorks HD and QuickBooks Online; the new TCS Inspect 2.0; RT Systems (warehouse management) integration for sales orders, transfer orders, inventory items, retail store replenishment, purchase orders and inventory receipts; better-designed order prompts; part core management and even Michelin BWS integration for dealers to easily access see the quantity available, and price of Michelin and Michelin's wholesale distributor network of brands. 

"As we continually improve this offering, our goal is to help tire and auto repair businesses of all sizes effectively run their day-to-day by maximizing opportunity within each customer interaction," TCS' Carpenter said. 

In addition, a healthy portion of the exhibit space in North Hall will be dedicated to mobile electronics and the many manufacturers currently serving the aftermarket.  

Among the many suppliers already on the 2024 SEMA Show floor plan, Rydeen and Pioneer not only plan on showcasing new product lines and features but also expect to gather valuable feedback from their customers to hone in future plans.

North Hall is home to the business services and mobile electronics sections of the SEMA Show.

One such area for growth, according to Maeda, is the electric vehicle (EV) market. During the event, the company will debut its new line of Tesla accessories to dealers and distributors, opening up new opportunities for Tesla drivers to customize their vehicles. 

"Innovation is thriving across the mobile electronics and technology markets, particularly in response to the increasing number of electric vehicles on the road," Maeda said. "Our industry is adapting by developing products tailored for these vehicles, ensuring seamless integration and offering customers the opportunity to further enhance their driving experience. As customers seek differentiation, there's a continuous push for unique upgrades and sensible solutions to meet their evolving needs."  

Pioneer, meanwhile, will highlight another new area of development for the company, as well as the expansion of some of its features to new levels of its product lineup. 

"We are unveiling groundbreaking features and technology to enhance the seamless usability of CarPlay and Android Auto," said Sam Paek, director of marketing at Pioneer. "Our primary goal is to elevate safety and address major pain points while creating the ultimate ease of use. Traditionally, these benefits have been featured within our high-end units, but now they are available in mid-level ones as well, offering unique features and functionalities not yet available in the market." 

The company is also taking advantage of the creativity of the industry and is partnering with a yet-to-be-revealed custom builder to demonstrate its array of speaker products.  

"We're teaming up with a renowned custom builder to showcase the full Pioneer solution alongside another surprise demo truck, ready to turn up the volume with our exceptional selection of speakers," said Paek. "It's time to bring our speakers out of the shadows and into the spotlight where they belong. We're confident that everyone will recognize Pioneer not only as a leader in head units but also as a powerhouse in speaker technology."

SEMA News sources recently caught new images of the new Ferrari F250 Hypercar during testing, but this time with a lot less camouflage.

Although details are scarce, the hypercar is expected to forgo a V12 engine and instead utilize the hybrid V6 from the Ferrari 296 GTB. Power output could reach 1,300 hp, according to insiders.

Previous spy shots of a test mule showed the car with a massive rear wing, side air vents to cool the mid-mounted engine, and a hood scoop reminiscent of the F50. Downforce will be significant, and although it’s unclear if any of the aero elements will be adjustable, it’s likely since both the 296 and SF90 feature active aero technology, sources said.

An official debut is rumored for later this year or early 2025.

PRO Cup Challenge

Automotive restylers have limited time left to apply to showcase a creative vehicle package in the SEMA Professional Restylers Organization (PRO) booth in the West Hall at the 2024 SEMA Show, as part of the council's 2024 PRO Cup Challenge.

Open exclusively to PRO member companies, the PRO Cup Challenge is a competition that invites automotive restylers to design an accessory package for a new-model car or truck. Six competitors will have their build showcased in the SEMA Show PRO Booth, where it will voted on by industry judges and SEMA Show attendees for the chance to win one of two coveted awards. Judges will select a PRO Cup Challenge-winning vehicle based on the vehicle's marketability, ease of reproduction, creativity and profitability. SEMA Showgoers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite accessory package and recognize it with the People's Choice Award.

"The essence of the program is to inspire and motivate others to customize their new-model vehicles," said PRO Council Director Denise Waddingham. "It also offers a platform unlike any other for restylers to showcase their talents to dealerships, build brand awareness and solidify their expertise."  

The council is seeking applications that represent all vehicle segments. The vehicle packages must meet the following criteria:

  • The package must be for a new-model vehicle.
  • The package must require no more than 40 hours of labor.
  • The wholesale cost to the dealer must not exceed $12,500.

In addition to showcasing their build in the PRO booth, competitors will benefit from networking opportunities at the SEMA Show, promotional support on SEMA's channels, industry recognition as a top restyler, and inclusion in SEMA Show media announcements.

Applications for the 2024 PRO Cup Challenge are due August 9, 2024. Selected applicants will be required to submit a build sheet with the basic idea of their package by September 6, 2024. For full build criteria and to apply, visit www.sema.org/pro-cup-challenge.
