SEMA News: How many years have you been with your current company and what do you enjoy most about working there?

What I enjoy most about owning my Tint World franchise is the ability to connect with customers and fulfill their automotive needs. SN: What is the most challenging part of your business or job?

MG: One of the most challenging parts is overcoming gender-related biases and stereotypes that still exist in some areas of the automotive industry. While the industry is becoming more inclusive, there can still be instances where women face unique challenges and biases that require resilience and determination to overcome.

For instance, there may be instances where customers or industry professionals may question a woman's expertise or authority in the automotive field. It can be challenging to assert oneself and gain the trust and respect of others in such situations. Additionally, the lack of representation of women in leadership positions within the industry can sometimes make it harder to find mentors and role models who can provide guidance and support.

Another challenge is achieving a work-life balance. Running a business while having a demanding job can require long hours and significant dedication. Balancing work commitments with personal and family responsibilities can be challenging.

It's crucial for the industry as a whole to continue promoting gender equality and inclusivity, creating opportunities for women to thrive and succeed. By addressing and dismantling gender biases, providing mentorship and support and fostering an inclusive work environment, we can overcome these challenges and create a more diverse and vibrant automotive industry for everyone.

SN: How many years have you been in the industry, and what was your first industry job?

MG: As the owner of the Tint World El Paso franchise, which has been open for two years, I have been actively involved in the automotive industry for that same duration. Prior to launching my franchise, I had no industry experience.

Starting my own franchise has allowed me to immerse myself in the industry, gain hands-on experience, and expand my knowledge and expertise. Over the past two years, I have been dedicated to building and growing my business, connecting with customers, and staying updated with the latest trends and advancements in the automotive sector.

While I may be relatively new to the industry in terms of years, my commitment and drive have enabled me to make significant strides in a short period. I am proud to contribute to the automotive industry through my franchise and look forward to many more years of growth and success within this dynamic field.

SN: What three qualities got you to where you are today?

MG: As the CFO for a Texas Workforce Development Board for 10 years, I have developed and honed several qualities that have been instrumental in my journey and contributed to my success. These qualities have also prepared me to be a successful Tint World franchisee. Here are three qualities and how they have benefited me in both roles:

1. Financial acumen: Having a deep understanding of financial principles, budgeting and strategic financial management has been crucial in both my role as a CFO and as a Tint World franchisee. This quality has allowed me to effectively manage the financial aspects of my franchise, such as budgeting, cash flow management and financial analysis. It has helped me make informed decisions about investments, pricing strategies and cost control, ensuring the financial health and profitability of my franchise.

2. Leadership skills: Strong leadership skills have been essential in my career as a CFO and as a franchisee. The ability to inspire and motivate teams, provide clear direction and foster collaboration has helped me effectively manage financial operations and drive organizational success. These leadership qualities have also translated into my role as a franchisee, allowing me to lead and empower my team, establish a positive work culture, and deliver exceptional customer service. They have enabled me to create a cohesive and high-performing team within my Tint World franchise.

3. Problem-solving and analytical thinking: Problem-solving and analytical thinking have been integral to my roles as a CFO and franchisee. The ability to identify issues, analyze complex financial data, and develop innovative solutions has allowed me to overcome challenges in both settings. In my franchise, these qualities have helped me tackle operational and financial hurdles, adapt to market changes, and optimize business processes. They have enabled me to make data-driven decisions, identify growth opportunities, and navigate the competitive automotive industry successfully.

The combination of these qualities has prepared me to be a successful Tint World franchisee by providing a solid foundation in financial management, leadership and problem-solving. They have helped me ensure the financial viability and profitability of my franchise while effectively leading and managing my team. Moreover, these qualities have allowed me to approach challenges with a strategic mindset, seek continuous improvement and deliver exceptional service to my customers.

Overall, the experience and qualities gained from my previous role as a CFO have equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to thrive as a Tint World franchisee. They have provided me with a strong business acumen, leadership capabilities and a solutions-oriented approach that contributes to the success of my franchise.

SN: Being a woman in the industry, what have been your biggest challenges and accomplishments?

MG: As a woman in the automotive industry, I have faced both unique challenges and celebrated significant accomplishments throughout my journey. One of the biggest challenges I have encountered is overcoming gender-related biases and stereotypes that persist in some areas of the industry. There have been instances where my expertise or authority has been questioned based on my gender, requiring me to assert myself and earn the respect and trust of others.

However, these challenges have also been opportunities for personal growth and achievement. One specific situation comes to mind where I encountered skepticism from a customer who doubted my knowledge and capabilities because of my gender. I responded confidently and knowledgeably by addressing their concerns, providing them with detailed explanations, and demonstrating my expertise. By the end of our interaction, I not only won their trust but also received positive feedback on my professionalism and industry knowledge.

This situation stands out as an accomplishment because it showcased my ability to overcome biases and stereotypes, proving that women can excel and succeed in the automotive industry. It reinforced the importance of perseverance, self-confidence and the continuous pursuit of knowledge. By consistently demonstrating my skills and expertise, I have been able to earn the respect and recognition of colleagues, customers and industry professionals.

My presence as a woman in the automotive industry has been an accomplishment in itself. By breaking barriers and challenging gender norms, I have contributed to a more diverse and inclusive industry. I take pride in being a role model and mentor for other women who aspire to pursue careers in the automotive sector. I believe that representation matters, and by sharing my experiences and accomplishments, I hope to inspire and empower other women to pursue their passions and thrive in the industry.

Overall, while challenges exist, my accomplishments as a woman in the automotive industry have been rooted in perseverance, expertise and the ability to challenge and overcome gender biases. By consistently proving my worth and making meaningful contributions, I am proud to have made a positive impact on the industry and opened doors for future generations of women in automotive.

SN: Who are your role models or mentors in the industry? What keeps you here?

His vision, dedication and entrepreneurial spirit have inspired me throughout my journey as a Tint World franchisee.

SN: What is the best career advice you have received?

MG: As a woman in the automotive industry, the best career advice I have received is to embrace and trust my own capabilities. This advice has been invaluable both professionally and personally, empowering me to navigate the industry with confidence and resilience.

Embracing my abilities means recognizing that my skills, knowledge and unique perspective as a woman bring value to the table. It has allowed me to overcome self-doubt and imposter syndrome which can sometimes be prevalent in male-dominated fields. This advice has helped me believe in myself and my potential, enabling me to take on new challenges and seize opportunities without hesitation.

Trusting my capabilities has been pivotal in my professional growth. It has encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, pursue leadership roles and seek out new learning experiences. This advice has taught me that I can take on any task or project, even if it initially feels daunting. By trusting in my abilities, I have been able to make bold decisions, lead teams effectively and achieve remarkable outcomes.

Moreover, this advice has had a profound impact on my personal life as well. It has taught me to be self-assured, assertive and resilient in all aspects of my life. By embracing and trusting myself, I have cultivated a strong sense of self-worth and the courage to pursue my passions fearlessly. I would encourage other women in the field to embrace their abilities and trust themselves as well. Each of us has unique talents and perspectives to contribute, and by recognizing our own worth, we can make a significant impact in the automotive industry and beyond.

SN: Have you always wanted to work in the automotive industry?

MG: While I am an accountant by profession, working in the automotive industry was not something I had envisioned for myself initially. However, what keeps me here is the realization that my capabilities are not defined by gender, and I am just as capable as any man in this industry.

I may not have imagined myself working in the automotive field, but as I became more involved, I recognized the immense potential and opportunities it offered. The automotive industry is dynamic, innovative and constantly evolving, which makes it an exciting space to work in.

Moreover, what keeps me here is the firm belief that my skills from the corporate world, regardless of my gender, are valuable and applicable in this industry. I can contribute, make an impact and stand my ground just as any man would. I refuse to let stereotypes or biases hold me back, and I am determined to excel in this field on an equal footing.

The automotive industry needs diverse perspectives and voices to thrive and evolve. By remaining in this industry and asserting my capabilities, I hope to inspire other women to pursue their passions and break down barriers.

In conclusion, while I may not have initially envisioned working in the automotive industry as an accountant, what keeps me here is the recognition that my abilities are not limited by my gender. I am determined to make my mark, contribute to the industry, and prove that I am just as capable as any man to succeed and thrive in this field.
