Maine State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus member Representative Shelly Rudnicki introduced SEMA-supported bill (LD 63) to allow on-road registrations for imported vehicles manufactured at least 25 years ago. These vehicles are exempt from federal safety and emissions standards, but current Maine law prohibits vehicles that do not meet these standards from use on public roads.
The state has been actively canceling registrations of certain imported vehicles as a result. Rep. Rudnicki’s bill is necessary to correct the current policy. Since this issue was first introduced in 2021, it has considerable media attention.
The bill currently awaits consideration in the House Committee on Transportation.
