Visit the “Save the Salt Booth” in the Central Hall (#24099) of the 2018 SEMA Show and see two record-breaking vehicles. The ’34 “911” Ford highboy roadster with a 4,000-plus hp engine hit 301-mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats is owned by Dave Davidson, and his team includes John Beck and Donny Cummins. The Guthrie-Levie Racing sidecar motorcycle will also be on display—John Levie reached a top speed of 320.304 mph in this vehicle. On Wednesday–Thursday, October 31–November 1, meet owner/builder Rick Vesco and driver Dave Spangler of the Turbinator II—the first wheel-driven car to exceed 500 mph. They will sign autographs from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. each day.
The Salt Flats possess rare physical qualities that have made it a perfect land-speed racing venue since 1914. SEMA, along with other organizations and companies comprising the Save the Salt Coalition, is working closely with federal and state government officials and the adjoining potash mine owner to restore Bonneville. A 10-year salt-pumping program is being developed to triple the amount currently being pumped to bring the Salt Flats closer to its former glory.
