According to the 2015 SEMA Market Report, adults who accessorize their vehicles tend to be younger and as age increases, people become less likely to modify their vehicles. The study also reveals that almost one-third of accessorizers are under 30 years old.

This relationship between specialty-parts purchases and the age of accessorizers challenges the long-held industry belief that older members of population are accessorizing their vehicles at a higher rate. The finding provides evidence that the specialty-equipment industry and vehicle customization are becoming more popular with younger enthusiasts.

In addition to younger enthusiasts spending more on equipment and upgrading vehicles at a higher rate, consumers who accessorized their vehicles in 2014 spent an average of more than $300 on specialty parts. Also, consumers of sports cars and classic cars spent more than $1,000 on equipment upgrades—more than any other vehicle type—typically due to their tendency to purchase higher-end, specialized parts.

This information and more is available through the recently released 2015 SEMA Market Report. The report is available to download at no cost to SEMA members. In addition to the compact-performance market, the report provides insight on the street-performance, light-truck, off-road, restyling, restoration, street rod and custom, racing niches.
